Parts of Lahore to face complete lockdown after midnight

The Health Minister Yasmin Rashid just confirmed that the Punjab government just announced that they will be locking down some areas of Lahore that have an increasing number of coronavirus cases being disclosed from the provincial capital.
During a press conference, the minister said that “Many areas of Lahore are going to be shut down 12am onwards from tomorrow.” She also said the areas that will be completely locked down include Shahdra, Shad Bagh, Mazang, Harbanspura, Old Lahore, Nishtar Ground, Cantt.
With that, some areas in Gulberg will also be closed completely including some societies in Lahore’s Iqbal Town.
The minister answered any question by saying that “Food stores and pharmacies will still be open in those areas. These areas will be strict lockdown for at least two weeks after which they will be reopened after the situation is assessed.
Dr Rashid requested the people that they should follow standard operating procedures announced by the government to help stop the virus. She also said that only wearing a mask can help to curb the virus by 50%.
In Punjab, Lahore is the worst affected provinces and has around 27,000 conformed cases and is the second-worst affected city after Karachi.
Last week, the Health Minister Yasmin Rashid did hint that the provincial government will enforce a lockdown in areas where there is a higher number in coronavirus cases.
In the same press conference, she warned that the number of cases will rise. The minister during the conference did say that the final decision regarding the lockdown will be taken by the cabinet committee.
The Punjab government took this action as the World Health Organization recommended implementing a strict two-week lockdown in Punjab as the number of COVID-19 patients was increasing day by day.

WHO recommended that for any government that wants to start lifting restrictions, the following six conditions must be met:

  • Disease transmission is under control
  • Health system can “detect, test, isolate and treat every case and trace every contact”
  • Hot spot risks are minimized in vulnerable places, such as nursing homes
  • Schools, workplaces and other essential places have established preventive measures
  • The risk of importing new cases “can be managed”
  • Communities are fully educated, engaged and empowered to live under a new normal
