Capital police prevail in tug of war over Shahbaz Gill’s custody

Police from Islamabad and Rawalpindi clash outside Adiala Jail. A court orders a two-day physical remand for the Islamabad police. In the Senate, Faisal Javed calls Gill’s remarks “a folly.”

RAWALPINDI: PTI leader Dr. Shahbaz Gill was taken into custody by the capital’s police force on Wednesday night following a two-hour standoff with Rawalpindi police. He was then transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).

Pims later appointed a five-person board to assess Mr. Gill’s health.

Mr. Gill was placed on physical remand for two days by a judicial magistrate, who also directed the Islamabad police to do a medical checkup.

But Mr. Gill, who was being imprisoned in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail—which is under the control of the Punjab government—was charged with sedition.

Even though jail officials were certain they had the resources to treat Mr. Gill, plans were made to transfer him to Rawalpindi District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital when he complained of respiratory difficulties in an attempt to obstruct the handover.

According to sources, a police party headed by Syed Shahzad Nadeem Bukhari, the city police officer of Rawalpindi, arrived at the prison to carry out the Punjab home department’s directive to transfer Mr. Gill to the DHQ hospital.

However, a group of Islamabad police, under the command of the SSP Operations, stayed outside the jail to apprehend him.

Unverified sources claim that as the standoff grew more intense, the interior ministry considered using Rangers to compel the handover. On the ground, though, no such movement was seen.

At the request of the Islamabad police, an Islamabad sessions judge earlier in the day placed Mr. Gill on a two-day physical remand.

Extra Sessions and Districts The application submitted by Islamabad Advocate General Jahangir Khan Jadoon was accepted by Judge Zeba Chaudhry.

Raja Rizwan Abbasi, the Special Prosecutor, begged for the remand in order to gather evidence and conduct additional investigation. He maintained that Mr. Gill’s precise role in the matter has been determined and that the police had nominated him in a FIR.

The prosecutor contended that finding the “co conspirators” and “those who authored the script” required retrieving his cell phone.

Following the hearing of the arguments, ADSJ Chaudhry ordered that Mr. Gill be medically evaluated right away and placed him under police custody for 48 hours.

Additionally, she gave the police instructions to bring him before a judicial magistrate when the two-day remand period expired.

Attorney for Mr. Gill had objected to the police takeover and then contested the remand order.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan voiced his worries on Twitter following the court’s verdict about the decision to place Mr. Gill under police remand for a second time.

The former prime minister expressed concern over Shahbaz Gill being placed under police arrest once more in a tweet that was published on his Twitter account. His physical and mental health are in jeopardy due to the abuse he endured during his kidnapping, transportation to a hidden location, and subsequent detention at the police station.

Mr. Khan went on to say that this was all a part of a plot to use force to get a fake confession in order to harm both him and the PTI.

Calling the action “totally reprehensible,” Mr. Khan further threatened to take “all legal and political remedies” in response to the party leaders’ “unconstitutional and criminal actions” and the claimed torture of Mr. Gill.

In a forceful response to the directive, PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said that judges were placing political workers under police remand so they could be tortured.

Additionally on Wednesday, PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan acknowledged that Mr. Gill’s criticism of the military forces was “a blunder” on the Senate floor.

Speaking in the upper house, Mr. Javed—who is reported to be a close confidant of Imran Khan—argued that the chief of staff of the party leader was not supposed to say these things.

He said, “Shahbaz Gill should be targeted and legal action should be taken since such words cannot be justified.”

He did, however, emphasize the need for a fair trial and denounce the claimed mistreatment of Mr. Gill. He made an application call as well.
