ECP rejects Imran Khan’s nomination for NA-108 by-poll in Faisalabad

The rejection of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s nomination for the NA-108 (Faisalabad) by-election was attributed, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday, to “insufficient details regarding his assets” rather than any problems with his signatures.

The returning officer’s rejection of the nomination was verified by a statement from the Punjab election commissioner’s office.

“The problem with signature verification did not result in the rejection of Imran Khan’s nomination papers. Insufficient asset data were the reason Imran Khan’s nomination papers were rejected, the returning officer was quoted in the statement as stating.

Farrukh Habib, the PTI’s central secretary for information, blasted the decision and declared that it will be promptly contested. He also stated that Imran would undoubtedly run in the NA-108 by-election.

On July 28, the speaker of the National Assembly accepted the resignations of 11 PTI MNAs, nine of whom held general seats and two of whom held seats reserved for women. This action led to accusations from the PTI regarding the “piecemeal” acceptance of the resignations and a subsequent legal dispute in the Islamabad High Court. On July 30, the MNAs were not informed.

Two days after Imran was removed from office as prime minister in a no-confidence motion, more than 100 people, including PTI parliamentarians, tendered their resignations in unison on April 11.

The ECP released a statement stating that on September 25, there will be by-elections for the following constituencies: NA-22 Mardan, NA-24 Charsadda, NA-31 Peshawar, NA-45 Kurram, NA-108 Faisalabad, NA-118 Nankana Sahib, and NA-237, NA-239, and NA-246 in Karachi.

Only a few hours after the ECP released the timetable, Imran declared his candidature for each of the nine open seats in the September 25 by-elections.

In the NA-22 Mardan and NA-24 Charsadda seats, the PTI chief filed his nominations on Friday. His agents then filed his nominations on Saturday for the remaining NA-31 Peshawar, NA-45 Kurram, NA-108 Faisalabad, NA-118 Nankana Sahib, and the NA-237, NA-239, and NA-246 constituencies in Karachi.

His nomination papers for the three Karachi constituencies were accepted by the ECP one day ago.
