Senators spar over anti-army campaign amid PTI walkout

In the Senate on Thursday, tensions rose as lawmakers from the Treasury benches accused the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) of initiating a campaign against the Pakistan Army. The opposition, on the other hand, alleged that the government was trying to distance the PTI from the military.

PTI leader Shahbaz Gill, detained for allegedly making “seditious” remarks about the military, was reportedly tortured, leading opposition senators to stage a walkout in protest.

During the session, Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman commended the army for its relief efforts in flood-affected areas but criticized the PTI for its anti-military stance. She questioned the preferential treatment given to PTI chairman Imran Khan compared to other political leaders who faced hardships.

The PPP leader criticized the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for Mr. Gill’s treatment and highlighted PTI’s alleged hypocrisy in its dealings with foreign consultants and its stance on international relations.

The Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) bill, 2022, aimed at safeguarding detainees from torture by state officials, was presented in the Senate. The bill was referred to the relevant standing committee for further review.

Opposition Leader Dr. Shahzad Waseem raised concerns about the anti-torture bill’s status and accused the government of torturing Mr. Gill to extract a statement against PTI.

Leader of the House Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized the legal approach being taken in Mr. Gill’s case and criticized the Punjab administration for defying court orders.

PTI Senator Ijaz Chaudhry claimed that members of the ruling coalition had used harsh language against the army, while Senator Faisal Javed suggested halting legal action against Mr. Gill until all politicians who made similar remarks were brought to justice.

PPP leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar condemned the alleged torture of Mr. Gill and called for dignity to be upheld, regardless of political differences. He criticized the use of torture against political opponents in the name of democracy.
