All that we know about PTI’s picks for prime minister, provincial chief executives

While everyone is busy making deals after the election, the PTI also thinks about what it can do.

The party recently announced its choices for prime minister and chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This came after a busy week of talks with its founder, Imran Khan, who is currently in jail.

Omar Ayub Khan has put himself forward as a candidate for prime minister. Mian Muhammad Aslam has been named as the chief minister of Punjab, and Ali Amin Gandapur has been put forward for the same job in KP.

Pakish News looks at the three people the PTI leadership chose for the highly sought-after jobs.

Khan Omar Ayub

Omar is the grandson of former president Field Marshal Ayub Khan. He is from the Hazara area of KP and is currently the secretary general of the PTI.

There are three main political groups that Omar has been a part of over the past twenty years: PML-N, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), and now PTI.

The Board of Investment (BoI) released a short profile of Omar that said he got his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University in 1993 and his master’s degree in 1996. The World Economic Forum named him one of the Young Global Leaders in 2007.

On January 26, 1970, Omar was born. He first ran for Parliament in 2002 and was the state minister for finance in the cabinet of former premier Shaukat Aziz.

He ran for office 2008 on a PML-Q ticket from Haripur’s NA-19 district, but Sardar Muhammad Mushtaq of the PML-N beat him.

Omar changed sides and joined the PML-N months before the 2013 general elections. But he lost again to Dr. Raja Amir Zaman of the PTI.

Omar went to an election tribunal and contested the results. The tribunal suspended Zaman’s membership in the National Assembly (NA) and ruled that new elections be held in seven polling places. After recent votes were counted, Omar had a lead of more than 500 votes and was named the winner.

Later, Zaman fought the first court’s decision before the highest court, which threw it out. After that, he asked for a review of the decision, which was granted, and Omar was removed from his NA post in June 2015.

Omar joined Imran’s PTI in February 2018. That same year, he ran for office on a PTI ticket in the general elections and beat Babar Nawaz Khan of the PML-N.

After Omar won the election, he was made the energy minister in the federal cabinet.

Omar was made secretary general of the PTI in May of last year, when the party was under attack from the government because of the May 9 riots. He was one of the few party leaders who stuck with the group even when things went wrong.

In the general elections 2024, Omar ran as an independent candidate backed by the PTI. He beat Babar Nawaz Khan of the PML-N by 192,948 votes, winning the race.

Omar will likely be running against Shehbaz Sharif, the PML-N nominee and a past prime minister. Sharif supports the PML-N, the PPP, the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party, and the Balochistan Awami Party.

Mian Aslam Iqbal Iqbal is a seasoned politician who has been in government for over twenty years. As an independent candidate, he was a Punjab Assembly (PA) member from 2002 to 2007. However, he supported the PML-Q and even held the job of state tourism minister from 2003 to 2007.

In 2008, he ran for office on a PML-Q ticket but lost. During the general elections 2013, he ran as a PTI candidate and won.

Iqbal was elected to the PA for a third time on a PTI ticket in the 2018 general election. He became the minister for Industries, Commerce, and Investment.

On the other hand, Iqbal won the election on February 8 from PP-152 (Lahore –VIII) with 61,847 votes. He was one of the PTI leaders charged with crimes in the Jinnah House case.

Iqbal, who is running for Punjab chief minister as a member of the PTI, will likely have to fight Maryam Nawaz, who is running as a member of the PML-N.

Khan Ali Amin Gandapur

Gandapur is a well-known PTI leader who was the federal minister for Kashmir issues and Gilgit-Baltistan from 2018 until April 2022, when the Imran government was removed. He was nominated for KP chief minister.

From 2013 to 2018, Gandapur was a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly for eight years. After that, he became a federal minister. It was his job as minister for income while in the provincial assembly.

After the government cracked down on the PTI, Gandapur was linked to several cases of attack and corruption in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. He is currently running away from the cops.

Jaish-e-Islami Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman lost to Gandapur in NA-44, and JUI-F candidate Kafeel Ahmad Nizami lost to Gandapur in PK-113 by a significant margin.
