Is Karachi airport closing due to Biparjoy?

Karachi: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) refuted the shutdown of Jinnah International Airport on Wednesday, even as Biparjoy approaches the port city and the internet is ablaze with rumors and false information.

A CAA official said to Geo News that although pilots get daily information on wind speed and weather conditions, airports follow the safety procedures outlined in the SOPs when there are bad weather predictions.

When faced with ambiguous situations, pilots independently choose the closest appropriate airport by taking the terrain and meteorological factors into account. The CAA has previously advised airlines and pilots to exercise caution in certain circumstances.

The representative stated, “The airlines’ flight schedules may be disrupted during bad weather.”

Karachi’s Rain Prediction

The Very Severe Cyclonic System (VSCS) Biparjoy is expected to affect Keti Bandar in the Thatta area, although it is not expected to directly affect Karachi, according to Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman’s statement earlier today.

However, 110 mm of rain is predicted for the port city.

Sardar Sarfaraz, the chief meteorologist for Sindh at the Pakistan Meteorologist Department (PMD), said Karachi was safe since the storm’s strength had slightly diminished.

“There is no dangerous situation in Karachi; the cyclone will exit from the city’s south,” he said.

Furthermore, Sarfaraz said that the storm was moving northward when discussing the course of the cyclone. “It will then move north-east, where it will hit or pass Keti Bandar and Indian Gujarat.”.

The top meteorologist further said that light to moderate rainfall is possible in Karachi today, while heavy rainfall is most likely to occur on Thursday and Friday.
