Prime Minister Imran Khan defends govt’s Coronavirus response

Prime Minister Imran Khan advocated his government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic saying that there has been no confusion or contradiction in official policies since the start of this pandemic.

Talking in the parliament during the budget session the Prime Minister said that he has repeated since day one the need to balance measure to fight the virus with that preventing people from going hungry.

He said to praise other treasury members “They said again and again there was no confusion if there was one country whose government didn’t have any confusion it was ours.”

He said the government had established a lockdown to limit to spread from COVID-19 the country has only 26 cases and no deaths. Now the provinces have reacted themselves as the lockdown was a worldwide phenomenon and the country didn’t have unified planning.

He also said that his team was afraid from day one that the lockdown did of Western Countries and China will not be able to be followed in Pakistan as the situation in the subcontinent is very different.

When talking about social distancing he said the people are giving examples of countries like New Zealand but New Zealand had social distancing beforehand as it has low population while Pakistan has high population with eight to nine people living in one room per house.

He also said “I am saying from day one we have dual problems one we have to save people from corona and save them from hunger and dying from poverty. He agreed that this government had to face a lot of criticism during the start and there was also pressure from cabinet members regarding enforcing a stricter lockdown as done in India.”

But the data coming now shows that the government took the right step when responding to the health crisis.

Addressing to the opposition benches he challenged their lawmakers to point out one statement that had inconsistency since the lockdown was first announced on 13 March.
He said “I had been regularly talking about two things if you have the population of Singapore and if you have $50,000 per capita income and if you have natural social distancing then a curfew is the way to go.

He added, “But I also talked about how the restrictions would impact the poor people on the conditions they are currently living in.”

Reminding that the government didn’t have any data on available ventilators and intensive care staff beforehand for which he praised the National Command and Operation Centre for collecting all the information daily and looking at trends with help of experts due to which the result we got didn’t have any inconsistencies.

Govt not hiding behind the coronavirus
The prime minister also discharged any criticism from opposition member that the government is hiding behind corona to take attention away from its economic performance, saying Pakistan was not the only country who economy got hit by the pandemic.

He said “Today the IMF has given figures that the world’s economy will face a loss of $12 trillion. The who world is saying that this will be the biggest economic crisis in 100 years adding that he finds the allegations of the opposition strange as the who world is facing a recession.

Responding to the allegation regarding government’s economic performance Imran Khan said that his administration had inherited a deficit of $20 billion.

He said “When we came the biggest issue that we were facing was inflation. The rupee was Rs 104 against the dollar but when we took office it jumped to Rs 122. Later the rupee fell and then stabilized due to the action we took.”

However, the exchange rate caused the import to become more expensive and as a result, the price of goods increase. Poverty was then unavoidable due to this adjustment but we inherited this.

The national debt had reached to Rs 30,000 billion by the time PTI came in power and reserves of $20 billion has decreased to $10 billion. As a result, we were forced to ask for help from our friendly countries.

The prime minister said “I felt shame when we went to others to ask for money. We were asking for that money because we were about to default.”
