Big Bash League dates announced with new finals structure

Cricket Australia announced on Thursday, along with the 44-game schedule for the summer competition, that a new finals format for the 13th season of the Big Bash League (BBL) has been established.

The first game of the summer tournament, which will include 40 home and away games and a revamped four-game finals series, will take place at the Gabba on December 7 between the Melbourne Stars, the hosts, and Brisbane Heat, the runners-up from the previous season.

In order to shorten the window, the number of matches has been decreased under the revised structure and fixtures.

There will be a unique mid-week final to cap up BBL 13. Before the top four teams advance to the knockout round, each club will play ten league games, according to Fox Sports.

Five clubs competed in a total of five knockout stage matches at the last BBL playoffs.

Following the first seven matches, there will be a five-day break in the competition from December 14–18 for Australia’s debut Test match against Pakistan in Perth.

Doubleheaders on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day are planned.

For the second time ever, the final will be contested during the week on January 24 after a four-game semifinal series.

BBL general manager Alistair Dobson said, “We’re incredibly pleased and excited with the BBL fixtures we’ve been able to deliver this season.” The 44-match series was announced.

After defeating the Heat to earn a historic fifth championship the previous season, the Perth Scorchers will be defending their title.
