Chris Rock reveals he declined the Academy’s offer to host Oscars 2023 after Will Smith slap: Report

Following the fight with Will Smith at the Oscars in 2022, Chris Rock reportedly declined the invitation to host the Academy Awards in 2023. The comedian disclosed that he was contacted by the Academy at his most recent performance at Arizona Financial Theatre in downtown Phoenix, as reported by the Arizona Republic.

Regarding O.J. Simpson’s murder trial—his ex-wife was killed because she left a pair of eyeglasses at an Italian restaurant—Rock allegedly made a reference to the trial during his show when he said that accepting the Oscars hosting position was like going back to the site of a crime. Reentering the Oscars, according to Rock, would be akin to asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”

Will Smith slapped presenter Rock, who was giving the Best Documentary Award at the 2022 Oscars, on stage after the comedian joked about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Smith apologized on Instagram after the slap incident, and he also published a video earlier this month in which he said, “Chris, I apologize to you.” I’m available for a conversation anytime you’re ready, and my behavior was inappropriate.” “I am deeply devoted and committed to putting light, love, and joy into the world,” the actor continued in his video. You know, I swear we can become friends again if you hold on.”

The Academy declared after the slapping event that the actor would not be permitted to attend the awards presentation for ten years. A week after Smith resigned from the Academy in public, the decision was revealed.
