Elections within the PTI are scheduled on March 3.

PTI Announces New Intra-Party Election Date

The PTI announced that it would hold new intra-party elections on March 3 (Sunday).

Loss of Emblem and Supreme Court Decision

The PTI lost its logo last month following a lengthy court struggle and hearings before the February 8 national elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan’s ruling that party internal elections were “unconstitutional.” was affirmed by the Supreme Court. The Court ruled that neglecting to have intra-party elections was a significant breach of the law and Constitution. Still, a political party could not lose its electoral symbol for a minor transgression. This ruling denied the PTI reserved seats, forcing hundreds of its members to run as independents under alternative emblems.

Postponement of Internal Elections

Concerns from members and an “unfortunate security situation created by the administration” led the party to postpone its internal elections to after the general elections, instead of the initially planned February 5.

Election Schedule Revealed

Today, the PTI’s Federal Chief Election Commission released the schedule for the intra-party elections, now set for March 3. The schedule on pakishnews.com outlines that the party will invite nomination papers from its members on February 22. Members can submit their nominations on February 23 and 24. The nomination forms will undergo scrutiny on February 25, with the deadline for filing appeals against the decisions on February 26. The final list of panels or candidates will be announced by February 29, with an updated list available on February 28.

Voting Locations and Results Announcement

Voting for the intra-party elections will occur at designated locations on March 3, with results expected by 8 p.m. the same day. A formal announcement will follow on March 4.

PTI Candidates for Leadership Positions

Barrister Gohar Khan announced that PTI Senator Ali Zafar would run for the party’s chairman position, and Omar Ayub will contest for the secretary general position in the upcoming elections, as decided by Khan.

PTI-Backed Independents Join Sunni Ittehad Council

Despite hurdles, PTI-backed independents secured most wins in the February 8 elections. They aim to form governments in key regions with the Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) help. Many winners joined the SIC. However, Omar Ayub Khan, Barrister Gohar Khan, and Ali Amin Gandapur focused on PTI’s elections instead. PTI sources say, except for Ayub and Gohar, all notified MPAs and MNAs have joined the SIC, eyeing reserved seats.
