PSL 2024: Quetta Gladiators win its third straight after overwhelming Islamabad United despite a late scare.

Rilee Rossouw, Sherfane Rutherford, and Jason Roy, the team’s captain, made significant contributions with the bat as the Quetta Gladiators defeated Islamabad United by three wickets on Thursday at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The victory came after Islamabad United had a late scare in their pursuit of 139.

Quetta won the toss and fielded first on a pitch that seemed to be dry and provided its bowlers some help. Even though they would have bowled first, Shadab Khan, the captain of Islamabad United, expressed his desire to bat on the surface since spinners would be coming into action later.

After getting off to a flying start with Alex Hales hammering 21 off 9 balls, Islamabad nearly made Quetta pay immediately. Hales was knocked off Akeal Hosein after hitting two sixes in the over. Islamabad’s innings were off to a flying start. They got back into the game and restricted the flow of runs after the dismissal, which provided some relief to the bowlers from Quetta. After six overs, Islamabad finished with a score of 60/1. The in-form Agha Salman blasted four fours to Mohammad Hasnain in the final over of the powerplay. Despite this, Islamabad could not capitalize on their strong start and lost eight wickets. As a result, they only added 78 more runs to their innings total. This was because Quetta bowled some solid middle-overs and death-overs. After taking three vital wickets, including those of Salman and Colin Munro, the bowler Abrar Ahmed, who remained a mystery, stood out among the other bowlers.

Even though five of the hitters for Islamabad got off to a good start, none of them could significantly contribute to the ball. Following the beginning of the pursuit, Quetta started with a cautious approach. To ensure that Quetta was never in a position where they could feel comfortable throughout the chase, the bowlers from Islamabad United, headed by Naseem Shah, bowled at some tight lines and lengths.

As the night progressed, batters’ failure to convert their starts remained. Only three Quetta batsmen, including Roy, Rossouw, and Rutherford, could knock out 71% of the chase total, leaving the remaining 71% up to the discretion of other players. In addition, Quetta was partially out of the game despite the string of wickets they took throughout the middle and death-over portions.

Ultimately, all they required was for Russow to remain until the very end. After batting at the other end of the field, Muhammad Amir assisted Quetta as they attempted to chase down the score with ten balls remaining.

Because Russow scored 34 runs without being out, he was awarded the Player of the Match.
