Pakistan to wear ‘special jersey’ in first England T20 to highlight flood devastation

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the national cricket team will wear a special jersey in today’s opening Twenty20 match against England “to raise awareness about the devastation caused by the floods in the country.”

An estimated $30 billion worth of damage has been caused by floods that have affected about 33 million people, killed over 1,540 people, and swept away homes, crops, bridges, roads, and cattle in addition to creating record monsoon rainfall in south and southwest Pakistan and glacier melt in northern areas.

Instead of the standard green color, fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani tweeted a photo of himself sporting the blue jersey. He captioned the tweet, “Pakistan’s new kit dedicated to the flood affected.”

The player number is visible in the image that PCB released, along with a pattern of rising water that represents floods.

The first four matches of the seven T20 match series are scheduled for September 20, 22, 23, and 25 in Karachi, while the remaining three are scheduled for September 28, 30, and October 2 in Lahore.

According to a press release issued yesterday, the PCB promised to donate all of the gate receipts from the first T20 to the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund “to help the victims of the devastating floods that have submerged one-third of the country.”

The current 50-over world champions, England, will also play a Test series in Pakistan in December, with New Zealand’s comeback coming after.

England was initially due to arrive in October of last year, but they had to abruptly cancel after New Zealand withdrew from a tour due to safety concerns.
