Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr. Neil Hawkins calls on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on 18 August 2022

ISLAMABAD On Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s desire for amicable relations with India and a resolution to the Kashmir dispute, and he called on the international community to do its part in promoting these goals.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) reports that Mr. Sharif shared these opinions with Neil Hawkins, the recently appointed Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, during a meeting.

“Pakistan desires peaceful ties with India, based on the principles of equity, justice, and mutual respect,” the prime minister was quoted by the PMO as saying. A fair and peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir conflict in line with the pertinent UNSC resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people was imperative in this regard.

“This is a crucial role for the international community to play in promoting sustainable peace and stability in South Asia,” the prime minister stated.

Mr. Sharif also emphasized Pakistan’s ongoing cooperation with the international community in the wake of the Afghan situation, especially since August of last year.

The Australian high commissioner expressed gratitude to Pakistan for helping to ensure the safe evacuation of their nationals and others from Afghanistan, and expressed her own desire for further strengthening of bilateral relations. He conveyed his gratitude to the prime minister for hosting him and reaffirmed his intention to strengthen and broaden the current Australia-Pakistani relations.
