Pakistan’s trade deficit widens by 28.89pc month-on-month in August

In August, Pakistan’s goods trade deficit increased by 28.89 percent month over month to $3.53 billion from $2.73 billion in July, according to figures released on Friday by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

According to PBS statistics, the nation’s exports were $2.5 billion in August of this year, while its imports were $6.03 billion. Over the month, imports surged by 20.84 percent, while exports rose by 11.07 percent.

Nonetheless, year over year, the trade deficit shrank by 18.48 percent. As of August 2021, the trade imbalance was $4.33 trillion.

Year over year, imports decreased by 8.26 percent, while exports rose by 11.44 percent.

 

The trade deficit for the first two months of the current fiscal year was $6.26 billion, 17.13 percent less than $7.56 billion for the same period in FY22.

Exports rose 11.91 percent month over month in rupees to Rs533.63 billion in August from Rs494.72 billion in July. Conversely, imports increased to Rs1.33 trillion in August, up 21.76 percent from $1.09 trillion in July.

Exports increased by 50.11 percent year over year to reach Rs553.63 billion in August instead of Rs368.81 billion in the same month the previous year. In August 2022, imports increased to Rs1.33 trillion from Rs1.07 trillion the last year, a 23.62 percent increase.
