Complacency unaffordable for Pakistan in do-or-die clash against Hong Kong

Sharjah: It will be a do-or-die game when Pakistan plays their second and final Asia Cup T20 group stage match here at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday against tiny Hong Kong in the shortest format.

Pakistan will advance to the Super 4 stage, where the top two teams from each group will play in a single league if they win the match.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and their management team would have been accused of being too complacent in a game that may have enabled them to rest their key players had the outcome on Sunday been the opposite after their team’s tight loss to archrivals India in their first match.

Pacer Naseem Shah had cramps during the game against India, which may have been brought on by Dubai’s hot and muggy weather. Haris Rauf, a fast bowler, also didn’t seem entirely healthy.

Although no injuries were reported after the game, it remains to be seen whether Pakistan will try to save the now-available pacemen, particularly after losing key players Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Shaheen Shah Afridi before their Asia Cup campaign started.

Late on Wednesday night, Naseem and Haris also participated in Pakistan’s practice session. If one of Pakistan’s first-choice fast bowlers is rested, the think tank may also turn to right-armer Muhammad Hasnain, who was allowed to rejoin the team after his bowling action.

Babar allegedly saw batter Haider Ali’s power hitting during the net practice. After Pakistan’s middle order failed to make an impression against India, the 21-year-old right-hander is in the running to start against Hong Kong.

With 28 off 22, all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed was the lone player in the middle of the lineup to stand out. Before tailenders Haris and Shahnawaz Dahani helped Pakistan to a decent total with their cameos, players like Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, and Khushdil Shah also struggled.

Unlike the all-around four, Haider is a specialist batsman, so if openers Babar or Mohammad Rizwan leave the crease early, he can provide Pakistan with the solidity they need.

It will also be anticipated that Fakhar Zaman, who left the game against India after his dismissal went undetected by the opposition and the umpire, finds his form again.

The dynamic left-hander said Pakistan needs to try to avoid making the same errors they did in the first game.

According to a press release from the Pakistan Cricket Board, Fakhar said, “It was a tight game against India; the morale is high in the camp, and all our players are confident of doing better in the upcoming game.”

T20 is a brief format that gives both sides an equal chance to showcase their advantages.

“We need to make sure we minimize mistakes and give a strong performance if we want to compete in the Super 4.”

Having played 66 Twenty20 internationals, Fakhar knew what Hong Kong could offer. Despite losing by 40 runs, the team demonstrated their batting prowess against India on Wednesday after their impressive performance in the Asia Cup qualifiers.

“We will try to stick to our plans, but Hong Kong has played good cricket in the qualifiers,” said Fakhar.

The batsman from Mardan agreed that the United Arab Emirates’ climate challenged the players’ conditioning, but he insisted that the team was responding appropriately.

“We are attempting to stay hydrated despite the heat here in the United Arab Emirates,” he said.

“We need to be in top form because we’ll be playing in the Super Bowl against some tough teams.”
