Rohit Sharma plays down India’s poor Asia Cup form ahead of World Cup

India is on the verge of losing the Asia Cup due to back-to-back losses to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, but skipper Rohit Sharma needs to be more concerned with their performance in front of the T20 World Cup next month.

In a Super Four match on Tuesday in the continental T20 event being hosted in the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka upset the reigning champions, India, by six wickets with one ball remaining.

India’s prospects of qualifying for Sunday’s final hinge on other outcomes falling in their favor. Rohit’s squad also lost to their bitter rivals, Pakistan, in their first Super Four encounter.

India has yet to win a major international tournament since taking home the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy two years later.

“There is more pressure in tournaments where there are multiple opponents, like the Asia Cup and World Cup,” Rohit said to reporters.

“You play against the same opponent for three to five matches in a bilateral series, which allows for greater planning.

“It is our responsibility to help the players make wiser decisions under duress.”

With the T20 World Cup in Australia less than a month away, Rohit said there will be few changes to the team.

“Ninety-five percent of the squad is finalized. That’s about as far as modifications are concerned,” he said.

“We have a lot of questions, and throughout the previous three or four seasons, we have discovered some answers. We’ll draw the line at some point and declare, “This is the combination that we’re going to play.”

According to Rohit, the team’s morale was not affected by the Asia Cup losses.

“Every player is at ease and carefree,” said Rohit, the first batsman in the order.

“We want to preserve an environment in the locker room that remains constant regardless of victory or defeat. As a whole, everything is present; the squad is talented.

“We’ve participated in and won a lot of games.”
