Shaheen Afridi set to fly in from London for T20 World Cup in Australia

Lahore: Pace leader Shaheen Shah Afridi, who suffered a knee injury, will begin bowling in London during the first week of October. Later that month, he will go to Australia to join the Pakistan team for the T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council’s final day to submit squads is Thursday. Shaheen is expected to be among the first names revealed in the 15-person World Cup roster by head selector Mohammad Wasim. It is also likely that the names of three travelling reserves will be disclosed. These players will be readily available in the event of an injury.

After suffering a right knee injury in July’s first Test match in Galle against Sri Lanka, Shaheen could not play in the second Test of the series, the Pakistani tour of the Netherlands, or the just-finished Asia Cup.

His rehabilitation period was initially scheduled to finish on August 28. However, after the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical panel opted to send him to England since he couldn’t recuperate from the injury, he was also ruled out of this month’s seven-match T20 series against England at home.

Dawn found out on Wednesday that Shaheen can begin bowling at the beginning of the following month at the English rehabilitation centre. He will also be included in the Pakistan squad for their tri-series against Bangladesh in New Zealand before the World Cup despite having yet to play a game in nearly three months.

Despite Pakistan’s dismal batting performance in their Asia Cup final defeat to Sri Lanka, there should be no significant surprises in the World Cup and England series selection.

Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, had trouble at the bat throughout the competition, and several previous players have criticized the side for their slow top-order strategy.

Pakistan’s middle order was put under duress by Babar and Mohammad Rizwan’s poor starts, particularly in the last match against Sri Lanka when they lost by 23 runs. It’s a hit-or-miss strategy when a middle order consists of pinch-hitters rather than true hitters.

During the England series, Pakistan could try “a combination of five specialist batters along with two all-rounders and three pacers,” according to former Pakistani batter Sadiq Mohammad, who spoke with Dawn on Wednesday.

“During the series, players like Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, Haider Ali, and Imam-ul-Haq should be tried,” he stated.

Dawn was informed by sources that Shan was unhappy with the way the selectors treated him and that he wanted to play for the English county Derbyshire. Thus, he quit the brief training camp in Lahore before visiting the Netherlands.

There have been many calls to include Shan, who has been quite successful with the bat this year in county cricket and several franchise leagues during the Asia Cup.

Shan, along with veteran Shoaib Malik and explosive opener Sharjeel Khan, who have both been among the runs in the current National T20 Cup, would boost Pakistan’s middle order, according to former national selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.

At a Lahore event, he told reporters, “I think Shan, Sharjeel, and Malik should be in the team, especially in the middle order.”

But with the World Cup drawing near, it is unlikely that Pakistan would make many team changes.
