Tea, national pride: Remembering “Tea is Fantastic”

February 27th celebrates the fifth anniversary of “Tea is Fantastic” or “Surprise Day.”

Though unfamiliar, the mysterious moniker has a special place in the country’s recent history.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) codenamed the 2019 aerial engagement with the Indian Air Force “Operation Swift Retort”. Pakistani soldiers arrested Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman after the incident.

Social media circulated a video of Abhinandan drinking tea in Pakistani detention. Despite his capture, his laid-back attitude and love of tea connected with many. This act inspired national pride and perseverance in many Pakistanis.

A viral video showed Abhinandan’s respect for the code of conduct and Pakistani hospitality. “#TsFantastic” trended for 36 hours, reflecting the unexpected turn of events and social media interest.

The episode shaped military history and culture, emphasizing the importance of modest gestures during battle.

Five years later, Pakistanis still talk about “Abhinandan’s tea” and foreign media has covered it, signifying a time when diplomacy and hospitality crossed borders. Tea is Fantastic Pakish News
