George Floyd died on May 25 he died during getting arrested as he was accused of using counterfeit bills for buying cigarettes. His death started a protest across the United States on racism and police brutality.
“Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against Derek Chauvin he will now be getting 2nd degree charges for the murder of George Floyd and the three other officers are also charged. This is another important step for justice” US Senator Amy Klobuchar tweeted.
Chauvin was originally charged with third degree murder which is the same as manslaughter but now he is getting charged with second-degree murder which has some stiff penalties.
According to the document issued by the Court second degree murder charges were added to the previous charge. The other three officers have now been charged with aiding and abetting second degree murder.
A statement released by Floyd’s family described the new charges to be a bittersweet moment.
In the statement, they said, “This is a significant step forward on the road to justice and we are delighted that this is action came before George Floyd’s body was laid to rest.”
A statement was also issued by family attorney Ben Crump in which he said “Ellison would consider increasing the charges to premeditated murder if the evidence shows it. The family urged protestors to raise their voice for change in a peaceful way.”
The protest which currently going on are more peaceful than before but there will still tense situations with the law enforcements but there was no robbing was happening like before.
