Emma Raducanu’s US Open title defence ends in first round

NEW YORK: Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka were both eliminated in the first round. At the same time, Emma Raducanu’s US Open championship defense ended at the first hurdle on Tuesday.

Although British youngster Raducanu had an incredible run to the championship as a qualifier last year, her matchup with Frenchwoman Alize Cornet at Flushing Meadows was less memorable as she lost 6-3, 6-3.

“Very disappointed, obviously. It is very sad to be leaving this place. This is my favorite tournament, Raducanu said. “I’m glad that everything is fresh. The target will be off my back.

After losing shockingly 6-4 and 6-4 to French qualifier Clara Burel, Rybakina became the most recent high seed to withdraw from the competition. Meanwhile, Osaka, who was not seeded this year, fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, to Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins.

Only twice on tour since April has four-time major champion and former world number one Osaka triumphed.

“I made all effort I could. I was itching to play, not to have agony in my back. I just officially began serving two days ago,” Osaka said.

Venus Williams, the two-time champion of the US Open, lost to Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium 6-1 7-6, but world number one Iga Swiatek easily advanced to the second round after dominating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-0.

After overcoming a set down to defeat Greet Minnen 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, Swiatek will next play 2017 winner Sloane Stephens. Meanwhile, fourth seed Paula Badosa overcame an early scare to defeat Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, the three-time runner-up, also advanced to a highly fraught match.

Just last week, Azarenka was pulled from an exhibition on the eve of the US Open that was intended to raise money for Ukraine. Kostyuk is a strong opponent of the participation of Russian and Belarusian players on the circuit.

The 20-year-old Kostyuk said that she declined Azarenka’s invitation to perform in protest, and the 33-year-old Belarusian was immediately removed from the occasion.

As a strong friend of Russia, Belarus has let Moscow strike Ukraine from its territory while the conflict is still raging.

Magda Linette was defeated by former world number one Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) in a match where there wasn’t much between the two women until the decisive set tiebreak.

Eighth seed Jessica Pegula of the United States defeated Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-2, while Garbine Muguruza, the twice Grand Slam winner, progressed in straight sets by defeating Clara Tauson 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

After defeating Catherine Harrison 6-1, 6-3, sixth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will be joining them in the second round.

However, Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in straight sets, winning 7-6 (3-7), 6-4.

NADAL GETS AWAY WITH IT

In the men’s draw, Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata, 21, defeated Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, despite an early scare. This was Nadal’s first visit to Flushing Meadows since winning the 2019 championship.

The third-ranked player in the world, Rafael Nadal, has only played one match since surrendering his Wimbledon semi-final due to an abdominal ailment. He is aiming for his third Grand Slam victory in 2022.

“I’m overjoyed to be here. It’s been a while since I played here. The 36-year-old Nadal, who will next play Italian Fabio Fognini, who memorably overcame him in the third round of the 2015 French Open after trailing him by two sets, added, “I thought that maybe I’d never be back.”

As the third Italian to compete in a five-setter on Tuesday, Fognini overcame Aslan Karatsev 1-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 after making a comeback from a two-set deficit.

In the longest match of the tournament so far, which lasted 4-1/2 hours, his countryman Lorenzo Musetti overcame Belgian David Goffin 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9) after trailing 2-5 in the last set.

The first-round action between Italian 11th-seed Jannik Sinner and Germany’s Daniel Altmaier lasted more than three and a half hours. Sinner won 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, and 6-1. Sebastian Baez, the Argentinean opponent of third seed Carlos Alcaraz, retired when the Spanish youngster was ahead 7-5, 7-5, 2-0. This made Alcaraz, who progressed as the third seed, the youngest person to reach the quarterfinals in New York a year earlier.

Seventh-seeded Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom easily defeated eighth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz 6-0, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, while Oscar Otte, beaten 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, did not have a single break point chance.

In his match against Laslo Djere, Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev lost two sets in a row and had to battle hard to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

After his American opponent Jack Sock resigned with an injury while leading 6-3, 7-5, 0-6, 0-1, Diego Schwartzman, the 14th seed from Argentina, progressed to the second round. Denis Shapovalov, the 19th seed from Canada, defeated Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland in a hard-fought match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Playing in his last event before retiring, American John Isner and Brandon Nakashima progressed in straight sets over Federico Delbonis and Pavel Kotov, respectively. However, Sam Querrey lost to Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, and was eliminated in the first round.
