From Miandad to Naseem: 5 Pakistan six-shooting heroes

In an exciting match on Wednesday, Pakistani fast bowler Naseem Shah hit left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi for two consecutive sixes to send his side to the Asia Cup final.

Five iconic six-hitting moments in Pakistani cricket history are examined by AFP Sport.

Magnificent Miandad

India supporters are still stung by Javed Miandad’s last-ball six against Chetan Sharma in the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup final in Sharjah.

Pakistan was in danger at 61-3, needing 246 to win, but Miandad hit an unbeaten 116 off 114 balls to turn things around.

India’s fast bowler Sharma threw a full toss, and Miandad smashed it high over the leg side and into the crowd, setting up loud celebrations when four were required off the last ball.

Mujtaba leveler

Asif Mujtaba was a fearless middle-order batsman who batted left-handed in a 1992 World Series match against Australia. He smashed a six off Steve Waugh’s last delivery to draw the game in a thrilling encounter.

In an attempt to win in Hobart by chasing 228 runs, Pakistan fell to 197-7, but Mujtaba would not give up and, with 17 required to win the last over, the captain of Australia gave the ball to part-time seamer Waugh.

To tie the score, Mujtaba smacked him all over the field and smashed the final ball, a full toss, over midwicket.

“Boom Boom” Afridi

With his brilliant batting, Shahid Afridi won many thrilling games for Pakistan; but, his two sixes against India’s Ravichandran Ashwin in an Asia Cup 50-over encounter in 2014 will always have particular significance.

After getting a wicket to begin the 50th over, Ashwin made it 10 for Pakistan, who were chasing 246.

With one wicket and two balls remaining, however, Afridi lived up to his “Boom Boom” moniker by smashing the off-spinner for two consecutive sixes as Pakistan triumphed.

When Asif shows up

When Asif Ali stunned Afghanistan’s Karim Janat with four consecutive sixes to signal his entrance at the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last year, he was a relatively unknown player.

When Asif entered the batting position, Pakistan needed 26 from 18 balls.

In the eighteenth over, Asif quietly observed from the non-striker’s end before hitting Janat four times over the ropes to send Pakistan packing with an over remaining.

heroics of Naseem

As Pakistan entered to bat at number ten on Wednesday, needing 20 from 10 balls with only two wickets remaining in their pursuit of 130 against Afghanistan, Naseem Shah became the country’s newest six-hitting hero.

Pakistan lost Asif in the 19th over, but Naseem held his composure to smash Farooqi’s attempted yorkers for consecutive straight sixes over long-off with 12 required off the last over.
