‘Game-changer’ Mohammad Nawaz savours all-rounder role after Asia Cup win against India

Mohammad Nawaz aspires to be a “proper all-rounder” after his brilliant batting display helped Pakistan defeat India, their bitter rivals, in the Asia Cup Super Four.

After Mohammad Rizwan struck 71 and Nawaz made 42, Pakistan, needing 182 to win, reached the mark in Dubai with one ball and five wickets remaining.

When the score was 63-2, Nawaz, a left-arm spinner who often batted at eight but was moved to number four, joined Rizwan, and the two made a crucial partnership.

In his 20-ball knock, Nawaz, 28, hit six fours and two sixes to get the chase off.

In addition to taking three catches and returning bowling stats of 1-25 against India’s 181-7, Nawaz was awarded man of the match.

“It has given me the confidence to play such an inning in a high-pressure game,” Nawaz told reporters after Sunday’s win in the regional Twenty20 competition, which serves as a warm-up for the World Cup in October.

“I have the chance to develop as a player and do all I can to meet the growing demands.

“I’ll put in a lot of effort and strive to become a better all-around player for the Pakistani team.”

In the sixteenth over, Nawaz went out, and Rizwan was out after two straight half-centuries.

Asif Ali (16 off eight balls) and Khushdil Shah (unbeaten 14) helped Pakistan cross the finish line in a frantic final over to avenge India, who had defeated them earlier in the competition.

“We wanted to go as deep as we could because Khushdil and Asif are the kind of players who can easily get 10–12 runs per over, even if we need it,” Rizwan said.

According to India’s captain Virat Kohli, Nawaz’s hit was the difference; he returned to form with a century off forty-four balls to keep the Indian innings together until he was run out in the last over.

“They have [recognized] batsmen left in case the situation gets tough. They took a chance to promote him and extend his batting stay,” Kohli told reporters. “So, how I read the game changed because of how he batted it.”

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, the other two teams in the Super Four, will advance to the September 11 Asia Cup final.
