Green, Wade help Australia clinch high-scoring contest against India

MOHALI: Australia defeated India by four wickets to win the first Twenty20 International on Tuesday thanks to a late charge from Matthew Wade and a blazing 61 from Cameron Green.

Australia, the reigning world champions, and India ranked first in the world, faced up in a high-scoring match that the visitors won 1-0 in the three-match series.

Earlier, after being put into bat at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, India amassed their highest-ever score against Australia with an impressive 71 off 30 balls thanks to Hardik Pandya.

Within five overs, the home team lost captain Rohit Sharma and opener Virat Kohli, but a 68-run partnership between K.L. Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings.

Between him and Yadav (46), Rahul scored 55 runs, leading India to 86-2 midway through their innings.

After both fell in rapid succession, India was on the verge of losing momentum, but Pandya delivered a brilliant knock that included five sixes and seven fours.

In the 21-run last over from Green, the all-rounder blasted a hat-trick of sixes and raced to a fifty off 25 balls.

The best bowler for Australia was Nathan Ellis (3-30), who also took two catches to get rid of Rohit and Rahul.

Australia’s intentions were indicated by Aaron Finch (22) who struck a six off the opening ball of their innings, but he was unable to convert the start.

Australia reached 109-1 at the 10-over mark when Green took advantage of a lost catch to blast four sixes before their top order collapsed.

Green was dismissed following an effort at a slog-sweep against Axar Patel (3–17), and Umesh Yadav returned to remove Steve Smith (35) and Glenn Maxwell caught behind in the same over after leaking 16 runs in his opening over.

Wade and Tim David turned the tide of the contest by combining to extract 22 runs from Harshal Patel’s 18th over.

born in Singapore In his Australia debut, David went out after making eighteen, but Wade survived to smash forty-five not out off twenty-one balls to secure the victory.

India was left to lament their bowling in the dying overs when they missed three catches.

On Friday, the teams travel to Nagpur for their second game.
