Kyrgios stuns Medvedev to reach US Open quarters, Gauff advances

NEW YORK: Nick Kyrgios of Australia knocked out US Open champion Daniil Medvedev on Sunday, while US youngster Coco Gauff made it to the quarterfinals for the first time.

The unpredictable 23rd-seeded Kyrgios showed off some fantastic shot-making as he defeated the world number one from Russia 7-6 (13-11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In front of a boisterous Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, Kyrgios, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the July Wimbledon final, displayed tenacity and poise by saving three set chances in the second set and then keeping his cool to win an incredible tie-break 13-11.

Despite losing the second set, Kyrgios stormed back to defeat Medvedev in the third and fourth sets, sealing the win in 2 hours and 53 minutes.

After winning, Kyrgios said, “It was an amazing match. As the defending champion, Daniil obviously had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but I’ve been playing amazing the last couple of months.”

“What a great spot to do it—a crowded New York mansion. I’m pretty fortunate.

While everything was going on, Medvedev said that the wildly talented Kyrgios had improved to the same caliber as tennis greats like Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

After seeing 21 aces and 53 winners fly past him, the 26-year-old stated, “Nick played kind of at the level of Novak and Rafa today.”

“He has every opportunity to win the tournament if he plays like this through to the finish.”

On Tuesday, Kyrgios will play Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.

In a five-set thriller that lasted three hours and twenty-one minutes, Khachanov defeated Pablo Carreno Busta, the 12th seed from Spain, to match his highest Grand Slam performance.

In the Louis Armstrong Stadium, the 27th-seeded Khachanov needed a long time to defeat Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

On Sunday, fifth seed Casper Ruud defeated French fortunate loser Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 to become the first Norwegian to get to the US Open quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded Ruud, who is 23 years old, will play Matteo Berrettini of Italy to advance to the semi-finals.

With victories against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain in the following sets: 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, Berrettini continued his remarkable run of recent Grand Slam singles achievements.

The Rome native, 26, was out for the French Open due to injury and missed Wimbledon earlier this year after testing positive for Covid-19.

But with his victory on Sunday, Berrettini has now advanced to the quarterfinals or higher in five of the Grand Slams he has participated in.

“It’s no secret that I want to win the Slams,” he said.

“It demonstrates my excellent level in Slams… I play my best tennis during the most crucial parts of the circuit.

Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, emerging American star Gauff defeated China’s Zhang Shuai 7-5, 7-5 to preserve hopes for the United States.

The in-form Caroline Garcia of France will now take against the 18-year-old 12th seed in an attempt to advance to the semi-finals.

Despite having a meager Grand Slam record, Garcia, the 17th-ranked player in the world, has become a dark horse in New York.

Five years ago, at Roland Garros, the 28-year-old made it to her only other Grand Slam, the last eight on home soil.

She did, however, come to New York full of confidence, having won the Cincinnati Masters lead-in tournament, and she hasn’t dropped a set so far at the Open.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia put on another brave show to advance to the quarterfinals after defeating Serena Williams.

Tomljanovic, who defeated tennis great Williams in the third round on Friday, progressed to eight after defeating Liudmila Samsonova of Russia 7-6 (10-8), 6-1.

Following her victory, Tomljanovic said, “I’m still a little speechless about the fact that I won.”

The fifth-seeded Ons Jabeur of Tunisia will take against the 29-year-old world number 46 in the quarterfinals.

Jabeur, who defeated Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, earned her first-ever trip to the US Open quarterfinals. In July, Jabeur became the first African woman to reach the Wimbledon final.
