Nadal hints at extended break after US Open exit

NEW YORK: Carlos Alcaraz overcame a five-set thriller to get to his second consecutive quarterfinal at the US Open, while Frances Tiafoe pulled off one of the greatest surprises of the tournament by defeating 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafa Nadal in the fourth round on Monday. The tie ended at 02:23 a.m. on Tuesday.

In the last-16 match, four-time champion Rafael Nadal fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and acknowledged that he wasn’t sure if he would be able to play tennis again after Tiafoe not only dealt the Spaniard his first Grand Slam defeat of the year when he withdrew from his Wimbledon semi-final due to injury but also condemned him to his earliest US Open exit since 2016.

Nadal has not played in a match since winning his fourth US Open championship in 2019, and there were concerns about his condition going into the hardcourt major. This was his first competition at Flushing Meadows.

Nadal conceded that his 24-year-old opponent had been the superior player in the match, saying, “I need to go back.” “I have things to sort out in my life, and I’m not sure when I’ll return.” I’m going to make an effort to prepare mentally. I’ll be there when I feel prepared to compete once again.

Along with his fierce opponents Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal is set to represent Team Europe at the Laver Cup in London from September 23–25. Nadal is expecting his first child with his wife, Mery Perello, later this year.

He said, “I have to go home now; I have more important things to take care of than tennis.” “I will make decisions depending on how things work out in my personal life, which comes before my professional life. Although it has been challenging for a few months, I want to end the year with the birth of my first child, which is something really significant.

Nadal’s year has been rather unpredictable. Although he has defeated Novak Djokovic twice thanks to his two Slam wins, his physical shortcomings have come back to bother him.

After suffering a stress fracture to his ribs in March, Rafael Nadal needed daily injections to relieve discomfort in his left foot in order to compete in the French Open for the fourteenth time in June. Then, an injury to his abdomen derailed his hopes of winning a third Wimbledon title.

His loss occurred only one day after Nick Kyrgios defeated world number one and reigning champion Daniil Medvedev.

The 24-year-old Tiafoe will play Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals after the Russian easily defeated Cameron Norrie in straight sets despite a rain delay.

“I’m so happy that I don’t know what to say.” I played amazing tennis today, and he’s one of the best players of all time,” said Tiafoe, who had only made it to one Slam quarterfinal in Australia in 2019.

Alcaraz, the quarterfinalist from the previous year, advanced to face Jannik Sinner after defeating Cilic, the 2014 winner, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Alcaraz is still on track for another historic run at Flushing Meadows.

In an exhausting encounter, Italian 11th seed Sinner required five sets to defeat Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, who was seeded lower, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to his third Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year.

Earlier, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated 108th-ranked German opponent Jule Niemeier 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 after rallying from a set and a breakdown.

In the semi-finals, Swiatek will face Jessica Pegula, who is currently riding high.

After defeating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2, Pegula became the second American woman to make it to the round of eight. Danielle Collins, her countrywoman, lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka.

The 2016 runner-up, Karolina Pliskova, who defeated three-time finalist Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, will square up against the Belarusian.
