Pakistan edge Netherlands by nine runs in 3rd ODI

In the third and final one-day international on Sunday in Rotterdam, Pakistan defeated the Netherlands by nine runs in spite of a valiant effort by the home team.

In the last over, the Netherlands were all out for 197. They needed 14 runs to win their first-ever match against Pakistan.

Pakistan was limited to just 206 by tight bowling, with captain Babar Azam leading the way with 91.

Tom Cooper (62) and Vikramjit Singh (50) scored the highest for the Netherlands in response, but Naseem Shah, a teenage fast bowler, contributed 5-33 to help Pakistan win the series 3-0.

On a cold, somewhat cloudy day, Pakistan had earlier won the toss and chosen to bat, expecting another large score off the bat-friendly and dry surface.

However, Dutch pacer Vivian Kingma got off to an early start in the second over, sending opener Abdullah Shafique back to the clubhouse at the VOC cricket ground for two runs with the first ball of his bowling spell sending the bails flying.

Pakistan edged to 150-5 by the 40th over as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

Emerging Azam, the highest-ranked ODI batsman in the world, was on 91 and appeared to be heading towards his 18th ODI century when Aryan Dutt, a young Dutch batsman, took the vital wicket.

Dutt dove and made an amazing one-handed catch after Azam pushed the ball into the air, earning him his tenth wicket in one-day internationals.

Dutt finally finished with statistics of 34-1, trailing 50-3 behind Bas de Leede, who keeps having an influence on the Dutch team with the bat and the ball.

Logan van Beek, a fellow seamer, was instrumental in breaking up the Pakistani innings as well; in the 17th over, he removed dangerman Fakhar Zaman’s off-stump.

Van Beek also made two catches, removing Mohammad Nawaz from De Leede’s bowling and Agha Salman from Shariz Ahmad’s bowling, just as Nawaz was picking up steam and smashing 27 runs off 35 balls.
