Thakur-inspired India cruise to ODI series win against Zimbabwe

HARARE: With one game remaining at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, India defeated Zimbabwe by five wickets to win their three-match One-day International series. Seamer Shardul Thakur took 3-38.

After opting to bowl, India easily defeated the hosts by 10 wickets at the same ground on Thursday. They first knocked them for 161 before pursuing their target with 24.2 overs remaining.

All six Indian bowlers claimed wickets, but Thakur stole the show with his superb swing bowling that removed Luke Jongwe (6), captain Regis Chakabva (2), and opener Innocent Kaia (16).

With a run-a-ball score of 42, Sean Williams led Zimbabwe in scoring, while Ryan Burl finished the innings not out on 39.

“It was a little slower in the beginning, but we were able to bowl more bouncers later,” Thakur remarked. “I can get better at anticipating the batsman’s next move and bowling in that direction.

“I believe I have good skill sets; all I need to do is keep honing them in the nets.” Sometimes all you need to do is slam the deck hard and hold tight.

Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, the heroes of the first game, each struck 33 but were unable to match their undefeated half-centuries from two days prior. India lost captain KL Rahul (1) early in their reply.

After putting on 56 for the fifth wicket, Deepak Hooda (25), and Sanju Samson (43 not out), brought India within striking distance of their goal.

On Monday, the third and final ODI will take place at the same location.—Reuters
