Wayne Parnell picked up five-wicket haul after Reeza Hendricks’s 42 and a fiery middle-order show from Aiden Markram (27 off 10), Heinrich Klaasen (39 off 16) and David Miller (34* off 20) dragged South Africa to a daunting 182 for 6 in 20 overs. Ireland didn’t stand a chance in chase even as Paul Stirling, Harry Tector and No.10 batter Barry McCarthy attempted to do the unthinkable for them with fighting efforts.
South Africa’s brisk start was dented half-way through when Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen fell in quick succession. By the 13th over, Hendricks was dismissed for 42 – falling eight runs short of what would’ve been a fifth consecutive half-century in the format. But once he fell, the middle-order trio came together for a second half flurry. They enabled South Africa to smash 128 runs off the last 10 overs, with 89 coming off the last six.
Ireland gave a feeble response to that batting effort as six of their batters returned single-digit scores. Before Stirling could even get going, Parnell stung the chasing side with two wickets in the second over – of Andrew Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker. Ireland suffered a bigger dent when Stirling fell – for 28 off 16 – in the last over of PowerPlay.
Curtis Campher and Tector attempted to resuscitate the innings with a 47-run stand, but Parnell arrived to break that alliance. Once again, he struck twice in a single over – dismissing the two set batters. Ireland then hurtled towards an embarrassing finish as they went from 88 for 6 to 96 for 6, but the final-wicket stand between Barry McCarthy and Joshua Little fought on. McCarthy in particular swung his bat around for his 19-ball 32 that included three fours and two sixes, before becoming Dwaine Pretorius’s third wicket of the night to bring down the curtains on Ireland’s chase.
