Mitchell Marsh hit 77* to close out the chase in 14 overs
Mitchell Santner struck a career-best 77 off just 42 balls to take his side to a comfortable win over the Netherlands at Voorburg. The New Zealand skipper’s promotion to three paid off spectacularly as the Blackcaps romped home in just 14 overs. Daryl Mitchell was the other batting star, smashing 51 off 27 in a 123-run stand for the third wicket. A poor PowerPlay for the Dutch and some excellent death bowling from New Zealand ensured the hosts were held to just 147 for 7 on an appreciably faster surface despite Bas de Leede striking a second consecutive half-century.
In contrast to the previous day’s game, the hosts did not help themselves in the field, with three catches put down in the chase, though with just 147 on the board a successful defence was never likely. Netherlands were on the back foot early as the tourists had the best of the PowerPlay. Micahel Bracewell struck in the first over as Max O’Dowd inside edged onto the stumps while Blair Tickner had Vikram Singh Singh well caught on the drive by Santner coming across from mid off. The hosts managed only 37 for 2 as the field spread.
Stephan Myburgh went soon after. He was dropped by Neesham at deep midwicket off Santner on 24 but rode his luck only as far as the next ball he faced, holing out to deep square off Bracewell in the next over. De Leede and Tom Cooper brought the Dutch back into the game through the middle overs. Cooper, scoring mostly behind the wicket, brought up the fifty partnership first by scooping Neesham over fine leg and then uppercutting over gully.
Cooper took the hosts past hundred, driving Ish Sodhi through cover next over, but lofted the next toward deep extra cover. Mitchell ran around from long off to take the catch to send Cooper back for 26 off 17 in the 14th over.
Scott Edrwads joined de Leede but both batters struggled to manufacture boundaries heading into the death. Ben Sears bowled an excellent 17th, giving up just three runs as de Leede and Edwards could not find late acceleration. Finally given room to free his arms, de Leede went to fifty driving Tickner hard through cover for four in the penultimate over. Edwards finally got one away in the next, reverse-scooping Sears for six over fine leg, but all told the back end of the innings was a fine exercise in containment by the New Zealanders.
With the wicket playing flat and comparatively fast, the hosts’ 147/4 looked well short of par, and the Dutch did not help themselves early. A miserly first over from Clayton Floyd was undone in the next. Logan van Beek opened with a low full toss that Finn Allen slammed over the square boundary for six, and the next ball, pulled straight to deep square, was shelled by Tim Pringle on the rope.
Pringle made amends taking Martin Guptill’s off stump in the next over, and Bas de Leede pinned Allen with his first ball in the next, but the wickets did little to contain the scoring. Mitchell Santner promoted himself to three and more than justified the call, racing to fifty off just 29 balls to essentially put the game to bed. Pringle might have had Santner caught and bowled on 43 but dropped a swirling leading edge in the ninth over, and by then the damage had already been done. At 96/2 after ten overs, the asking rate was under a run a ball, and there was little the hosts could do but try to delay the inevitable.
They did not delay it long. Santner was be reprieved again on 56, dropped over the rope at extra cover off Shariz Ahmad, but took no lesson in caution as he continued to look for the rope. He found two more boundaries off van Beek in the 13th though there would be no room for a maiden century. Rather, Mitchell took the chance for a milestone, taking Ryan Klien for back-to-back sixes down the ground before sealing his fifty and the match by slamming the last ball of the 14th through midwicket for four. The win sees New Zealand seal the series 2-0, capping off a perfect 11-0 run in the white ball leg of their European tour.
