Karachi mayor polls: 8 detained as unofficial results trigger clashes between JI, PPP

Following fights between Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) supporters outside the Arts Council of Pakistan (ACP) during the city’s mayoral elections, the Karachi police apprehended eight individuals on Thursday. Unofficial results showed that Barrister Murtaza Wahab of the PPP had won the mayoral race, with Naeemur Rehman of JI continuing to finish second. However, once the unofficial results were revealed, fighting broke out between the followers of the two parties. The JI employees staged a “peaceful sit-in” at the Arts Council Roundabout as the police made an effort to maintain order. At the time of the publication, the official election results were yet to be declared.

As the PPP celebrated its win, party officials congratulated Wahab and said that the nation as a whole should share in the achievement. They promised to address Karachi’s municipal government issues without bias. The leaders of JI, on the other hand, rejected the election results, calling them a “theft of public mandate.” They accused the Sindh administration and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of conspiring together, saying that vote tampering and unethical actions tainted the results. A “Black Day” would be observed nationwide, and the JI said that it would take legal action to contest the election.

Despite not winning the election, the PTI claimed that democracy had been lost and voiced unhappiness with the democratic process. A show of hands was used to vote for the mayor and deputy mayor, and the voting procedure was mostly orderly. Some PTI members, however, did not seem to cast ballots, and there were rumors that PTI officials who had been arrested were being transported to the polling place. With the backing of the PTI, the JI was the single biggest party in the City Council, while the PPP did not have a simple majority.

Concerning the PPP’s alleged coercion and incarceration of PTI members, the JI filed a case in the Sindh High Court for free and fair elections. In order to allow incarcerated union committee chairpersons and other elected representatives to cast ballots, the court ordered the province government and police to see to it that these individuals were produced.
